That’s my usual answer to business owners who ask me if “dishing out money to the Yellow Pages every month" is still a wise investment. If customers don’t normally think of your service or product until they need it, and a lot of your business is done by phone, an effective Yellow Pages ad design still rings in the most local customers for the money. So how do you design for this one-of-a-kind medium? The following eight guidelines will keep your phone dancing across your desk with new business.

1) Choose the Right Yellow Page Ad Size, You'll Save a Bundle.
Don't sweat about buying your way into first position by having the largest Yellow Page ad in your heading! Few people call only the first few (or largest) ads. Undecided customers are still looking for the company they can feel the best about, not the first company they come across. Prospects will respond to the Yellow Page ad design that A) Visually captures their attention and B) Engages and persuades them with ad copy that speaks to their emotions. Ad size is not as important as your sales rep claims. In fact, appearing in the first third of your heading is considered good positioning as long as your Yellow Page ad is properly developed.

2) Technicolor or Black & Yellow? Put Your Money Where It Matters Most.
If you're considering costly colors, spend your money on design first, positioning second, and color last. A properly designed, one color Yellow Page ad will easily outperform a larger, full-color ad that's poorly designed and without compelling copy. Bottom line? A bad Yellow Pages ad will get bad results regardless of color, size or positioning, because these things have little to do with convincing the customer to call you!

3) Ignore Most Readers; Embrace Your Most Important Prospects.
Tightly focused Yellow Page ad designs convince more customers to actually call and do business with you. Casting the widest net possible in an attempt to reach everyone forces you to compete with all the others in your heading and dilutes your message. Would you rather persuade 10% of the market 100% of the way into becoming customers, or reach 100% of the market and convince them only 10% of the way? Speak to your most important prospects directly, and they’ll reply – by calling.

4) A Masterfully Crafted Headline Nearly Guarantees Success.
If your headline fails (or worse, is missing), your ad will fail. Crucial is an understatement. Make sure your headline appears prominently at the top of your Yellow Page ad design and that it fills these main functions:

• Snares readers’ eyes as they scan the page.
• Conveys your most important benefit (Unique Selling Proposition), setting you apart from your competitors in a meaningful way
• Strikes an emotional chord with the reader, compelling them to read further. Spend 60% of your design time developing your unique, benefit-related headline. It's that important! Do NOT use your business name, logo or characterless copy. Your headline must set you apart from the others, prove that you fully understand your prospect's problem, and convince readers that you genuinely care about helping them.

5) Persuasive Body Copy Always Touches Their Hearts.
Once you’ve gained prospects’ attention with your lead (and image), you’ll need to convert their interest into confidence with copy that speaks to their needs. Undecided prospects are looking for the company they can feel the best about doing business with, so crawl deep into the buyer’s mind, and think like they're thinking at their moment in need.

Now write copy that addresses your prospects’ emotional state of mind, uses electric words that shock readers with the truth, and speaks to your prospects in the second person (you, you, you - remember, it's ALL about them). Do this and you’ll be overwhelmed at the number of customers that end up feeling the best about your business. Customers who are confident that you understand their problem and can solve it better than anyone else are customers confident enough to call you.

6) Eyeball-Popping Images and Clutter-Free Layouts.
NEVER use "expected" images in your Yellow Pages ad, EG: plumbers who display a fleet of trucks; lawyer ads that show gavels, eagles and flags; or storage companies that picture a row of meaningless storage doors. Washed out in a sea of insignificant “clip art,” these images blur into a quickly scanned background and push readers’ eyes to rest on images and designs that DO stand out. If you've done a good job creating your main headline, choosing an image for your Yellow Page ad will be easy. Your graphic should be an arresting, eye-grabbing image that:

• Reinforces your main headline concept, and
• Differentiates your business from the others, in a meaningful way

"Meaningful" is the key word. Clever and creative ad design that fails to persuasively address your prospects' needs might make readers smile, but your phone will hang dead in the receiver. You must both arrest prospects’ attention and draw them into reading the copy, AND persuade readers to do business with you. It’s a tough juggling act that most advertisers and greenhorn ad designers have a hard time with, but it’s the only act that increases sales.

7) Call Them to Action or Kiss Them “BUH-BYE.”
Prospects only read Yellow Page ads as a prelude to calling -- to give someone their business! Don’t frustrate potential customers by trying to send them to your Web site, giving them your email address, or worse yet, trying to brand an image. Your prospects are intending to call someone, so make sure you’re the business they call by asking them: “call right now!” Include a distinct call-to-action near your phone number. EG, "Call and get your FREE analysis now." Don't haphazardly place your phone number just anywhere. Your number and call-to-action should appear in the bottom portion of your ad, along with your address and other contact info.

8) A Professional Yellow Page Ad Designer? Choose Wisely.
Want results from your ad? Ensure your designer has experience obtaining those results for his customers! Many Yellow Page ad design "connoisseurs" are actually marketers with sparse ad design skills and experience. Some have simply chosen to mimic other successful Yellow Page design sites (so much for their creativity). Many offer the same lackluster skills your Yellow Page publisher provides for FREE. Ask for references and make sure their Yellow Page advertising design clients have, in fact, experienced improved response rates. If they haven't, keep looking. Never try to save a few hundred dollars in design fees at the expense of thousands in lost sales.

Effective Yellow Page ads skillfully combine these eight (and many other) design elements to work together to create a powerful emotional connection with the audience. Start out today with the idea that there is no reason why you should not be courageous. If any fear-thoughts come to you cast them off as you would the deadly viper. Form the habit of never thinking of anything unfavorable to yourself or anyone else. In dealing with difficulties, new or old, hold ever the thought, "I am courageous." Whenever a doubt crosses the threshold of your mind, banish it. Remember, you as master of your mind control its every thought, and here is a good one to often affirm, "I have courage because I desire it; because I need it; because I use it and because I refuse to become such a weakling as cowardice produces."

You first may be asking: what qualifies me as a Yellow Page expert? I worked as an advertising consultant for a Bell System division for nearly 25 years. During that time, I counseled about 3000 businesses in advertising design, marketing programs, and promotional campaigns. I was a top performer for about half that time and won numerous awards and honors. With that background, let me discuss the unique media known as directory advertising. In my market, we had about 80,000 businesses represented in the local city Yellow Pages. That’s a large sector of companies fairly reliant on a single product used by over 80% of the population. The Yellow Pages is a reliable constant that is relatively unchanged since its inception over 100 years ago.

Back then, it was a list of companies and their ads, bound together in book form, and sent for free to every resident with a phone. Today, it serves the same function: a current resource for business information. The only difference is the addition of full-color and the replication on the Internet. Otherwise, it’s your father’s Yellow Pages. It began as a byproduct of the phone company’s need to get the their subscribers’ phone numbers out to the general public. Then someone realized the value of actual ads that would offer additional facts such as hours, products, services, and locations. Presently, many businesses rely on their Yellow Page ads, exclusively. This is especially true for emergency service companies such as plumbers, electricians, and appliance repairers. Lately, more and more professionals like attorneys, dentists and plastic surgeons have discovered the power of this prevalent media. For them, it is a somewhat reasonable alternative to television and other mass media. Their ROI (return on investment) is high as is their exposure to every potential client. Most of this information is fairly common knowledge and a reminder of what the Yellow Pages means to the average user. The rest is not, hence the reason for this article. Here are some lesser-known facts I’d like to share as my part in educating the public: (1) The placement and size of the ad has no bearing on the quality of the business.
(2) Therefore, anyone with lots of money can get an ad, regardless of qualifications.
(3) In fact, some of the largest companies in town only have a simple listing.
(4) The advertiser can make outrageous claims, even if they’re lies.
(5) Some of the best, small businesses have the smallest ads, for many reasons.
(6) Many businesses with an “A” name do so only to be placed first in a heading.
(7) Words like “official, authentic, only, quality, & qualified” are often meaningless.
(8) Just because they have a logo like “GE” doesn’t mean they are GE approved.
(9) Ads with many phone numbers for different locations may only have one location.
(10) A business claiming they are 25 years old, may actually be brand new. So, the next time you pick up the Yellow Pages to make a purchase, be an educated consumer and know how the ads are placed and what they really mean. Or, if you are a business-person, learn what type of ad to run and how much to pay. Either way, the mystery of the Yellow Pages will no longer be confusing to an outsider: you’ll be on the inside.

An Ongoing Process for Advertising Managers and Marketers

Things change. In fact, everything changes. Sometimes in a matter of minutes. Sometimes slowly and imperceptibly. But regardless of effort, resources, management or absolute control, things change. The discipline of change management helps business executives to ensure that change works to their advantage.

Yet, frequently change management practices stop short of considering the impact that change has on one of your most important assets — your company’s brand. Recognizing that fact and responding to the manifestations of change with intelligent action is what separates the successful brand from the soon-to-be-forgotten product or service brand.

Maybe that’s too blunt, too harsh. Perhaps we should say things evolve and pursue a more palatable approach to facing the challenges our customers, our competitors and our marketplace present. I doubt it.

If you enjoy brand recognition or brand advantage, a periodic fresh look at your brand is crucial. Change happens; successful companies recognize when their brand requires more than a “business as usual” approach. They begin with customer-focused positioning and messaging. Then they monitor and measure their brand and brand promotion strategies in key areas, such as:

- Validating language with their target audiences and monitoring their success in communicating those key messages
- Testing creative executions and adjusting as necessary
- Watching closely how their target audiences are responding to their advertising, both quantitatively and qualitatively
- Going where their customers go. They explore, they measure and they explore some more.

This is not intended as a scare tactic. In fact, this shouldn’t be scary at all — at least not for those advertisers and their advertising agencies that are following a prudent process that checks for the need of more aggressive branding change management measures.

Yet, it never ceases to amaze me how little well-established enterprises know about their customer base. While they can trot out statistics on sales volume, cost per lead and the like, they are often unaware of the underlying motivations that drive these people to act in their favor or dismiss them all together. They haven’t yet made it past the occasional customer satisfaction survey – possibly their sole view into the hearts and minds of their customers.

In the pursuit of building brand value and generating greater ROI, successful brands not only adapt to change, they anticipate it, and they respond, re-positioned if necessary, to capitalize on it. They change manage their brand.

The more unique your owned advantage is, the better it will hold up over time. Change management practices should extend to your brand promotion strategies. Practices such as measuring how your brand performs and observing the impact of change to your brand promotion strategies are key. Great campaigns often have great longevity. But nothing lasts forever.

Unique Selling Propositions

Grab a phone book.

Now, turn to the section on - oh, I don't know - plumbers. Assuming you needed only routine work done, which number would you call?

If the ads in your phone book are anything like the ads in mine, you probably don't have a clue! And why? Because not many of the ads in the phone book, or in any other medium for that matter, do a very good job of highlighting unique selling propositions (USP) - the thing or things that separate a company from its competitors.

Take a look at (or listen to) one of your company's ads and those of two or three of your competitors. Now, do your best to put yourself in a potential customer's shoes. Assuming your only knowledge of your company comes from the ad in front of you, ask yourself: "would I be drawn to do business with my company?" Does your ad provide the information that really interests your potential customers, or is it full of trite fluff? Does it give people a real reason to choose your company over your competitors? Does it sum up in the time or space provided the real benefits of doing business with your company?

A unique selling proposition can do all of those things. It answers the question "Why should I do business with this company?" In a world in which your potential customers are bombarded with marketing messages from every conceivable angle, your USP clarifies. It distinguishes. It serves as your singular promise to the marketplace. "Here's what we will do for you, the customer, and here's why we do it better than anyone else." That's the USP.

It can be communicated in many forms. It can be as short as catchphrase or a positioning statement, or as long as a few paragraphs. Here is one particularly effective form:

1. State what it is your company does.

2. Let the prospect know how they'll benefit.

3. Then tell what separates your company from your competitors.

4. Finally, explain the additional benefits those differences bring to them.

Whatever the length, your company's unique selling proposition must state, in no uncertain terms, what it is that sets you apart from all the other companies that also do what yours does. Once you have defined that in its simplest, most easily communicable form, incorporate your USP into every ad and every marketing piece you produce. Make it part of your sales pitch, your Web site, even the language you use when answering incoming calls.

If it can be easily understood by consumers, if it states which specific void in the marketplace your company fills, and if your potential customers have been exposed to it enough, your unique selling proposition can be a tremendously effective marketing tool. But (and this a very big but) your company must be able to deliver on the promise that your USP represents. Don't craft your USP to say you'll deliver the highest quality product at the lowest possible price when you know you offer neither. Your USP is your word. If you don't keep it, customers will get wise and your reputation will be damaged.

Writing your USP may take a little work. It may require research to determine what it is, specifically, that separates you from the other companies in your industry, and whether your specialties are, in fact, in demand and of benefit to your potential customers. But once you've determined what those positive differences are, exploit them at every turn. Your USP will not win you every customer out there, but at the very least, it will help your company stand out in a very cluttered world...and the phone book.

When to Establish an In-House Advertising Agency

In my thirty years as an advertising consultant, I ran into many businesses that could have benefited from an in-house advertising agency. Instead, they spent fortunes on various agencies that were more concerned with making money than helping the client. So perhaps it’s time to set the record straight and offer some advise to anyone that fits the following criteria. There are several types of businesses that could be better off if they created a small division to handle their marketing needs.

If you have a product you manufacture, you are tops on my list. It’s your product and you should be controlling every aspect of the promotions. That includes: product development, packaging, logo design, national media placement along with trade publications, public relations and press releases, trade show booths, annual report publication and any supplemental support materials like brochures, spec sheets, and documentation.

It sounds like a daunting task, but any company that requires any or all of these marketing tools should consider doing it in-house. Why? Because of two things: control and self-interest. The business gets to control every aspect of the things the public sees regarding the image of the company and it’s in the businesse’s best interest to make the right decisions that will affect them most. In other words, would any advertising agency give them all the time and effort it takes to produce the work they desire? Perhaps they might, but at what cost?

Which brings up another issue: expense. Hiring a marketing director, copywriter and artist will be cheaper in the long run if the company can support the investment. It will prove more advantageous down the road to build this department and have a say in the personnel that runs it. You will have to provide the technology needed for the department to function, but having the ability to create internal collateral material is a time and cost saving luxury even a medium-sized business can appreciate.

Another point raised: business size. At what point in a business’s life can they begin to contemplate hiring a staff for an in-house team? Review your current advertising expenses. What would a staff cost in comparison, realizing the control you are achieving? Look at the media costs. Most media allow fifteen percent agency commissions that you gain through your own in-house marketing. What is that worth?

But what about the little guy? If you’re a small business that places ads on a regular basis, consider a single marketing person with the ability to design and place ads. It’s the beginning of an agency with a much lower cost. It’s how I began in the business. I was a designer for a small firm during college. I worked part-time and they used me as they saw fit. The investment doesn’t have to be large or long- term. But you’ll find more loyalty and cost benefits, for the most part.

That’s not to say that using a quality, advertising agency or consultant on occasion, wouldn’t pay off. They may still be needed for a special project or second opinion. But consider the value of an in-house person dedicated to your business. You may find that it was the best investment you ever made.

So they actually work for publisher and owe all their allegiance to them. Therefore, when you ask them for information or explanations, it’s always tempered by that one factor. In that instance, they are giving you the facts and references that support their suppositions. Is it unbiased and not-self serving? What do you think? This is not a knock against all Yellow Page reps. They do a great job and truly want to help the business. But are they totally honest? It depends. If they have been told to push a particular product, say a coupon or Internet item, they will offer a plethora of reasons that it will succeed. After all, they have a quota to reach. So expect a pitch regarding the latest and greatest new marketing idea as conceived by the publisher. But you simply want the straight talk on how your ad is working, without all the additional hype or frills. Then you’re in a bind. I’m afraid it’s a matched set of responses and you have to accept the situation I just described. Where does that leave you? You just want to know if the color is effective, is the ad too large or small, whether it’s placed in the correct heading and is it in the proper book? Your rep is paid by commission, according to how much you buy. Will they recommend that you remove the color or reduce the size? Hardly. They have a vested interest in keeping your current spending the same or more. There must be a better method. Hire a good consultant. So, how do I know so much? I was a YP rep and consultant for nearly 25 years and, prior to that, had my own advertising agency. I also have a degree in marketing. I’ve been designing Yellow Page ads for the past three decades. So I have expertise in YP creation and have advised almost 7000 companies on how to put together the most effective YP ads. If you have a display or in-column ad, regardless of size, color or position, I can tell you it most probably needs improvement in the headline, artwork, body text, placement, book, or heading. You must understand the ROI or return on investment and learn how to track the results as well. So consider getting some expert advice before you place your next ad. There are many good and inexpensive places to turn, some available on the internet. Make sure the consultant is well qualified with at least 25 years experience. Otherwise, you’ll be wasting your own time and money.

Advertising Your Business by Word of Mouth

To begin with, we need to get something straight. Word-of-mouth advertising is a misnomer. The dictionary definition of “advertising,” according to Webster is: “The action of drawing something to the public’s attention with a paid announcement, often through a printed notice or a broadcast.” Therefore, WOM is NOT advertising. It is neither bought nor controllable, to any large extent. Spreading WOM advertising is more akin to allowing the wind to control a kite. Sometimes it goes up and often times eventually, comes down. When a consumer uses your product or service, your job is done. Then the person has a variety of choices. They can (a) tell a friend or relative how great the experience was, (b) tell them how awful it was, or (c) tell nobody at all. It depends on the result. More often than not, if your business has simply met their expectations, they will likely do nothing.

If you produced a superior product or service, they may tell a few people. Ah, but if you have done a lousy job, watch out. They’ll tell the world about the awful item or event. Therefore, WOM has a 66% chance of not working in your favor. It works exactly like the news. A terrible situation with a tragic outcome has a far better chance of making the news than a warm and fuzzy, feel-good piece. It’s human nature. People are fascinated by horrible traffic accidents and will gawk for minutes or hours. They still discuss Princess Di, John F. Kennedy, Jr, and John Lennon’s death, even decades later. But, do they celebrate the living with the same enthusiasm? Knowing all that, why would any business continue to ignore traditional advertising channels and rely solely on WOM? At least with the media, they can structure their own program, target their market, and track the results. It’s not just a matter of money. Sure, advertising costs money, but it’s an investment in the company. WOM is free promotion, but is it positive? From what I’ve just written, you tell me. I sold Yellow Page advertising for almost 25 years, and during that time, I rarely had an advertiser call me up when the directory delivered to thank me for the wonderful ad. But, if there was even the tiniest mistake with the ad, guess how long it took for them to make that call? Can you say “nanosecond?” So become proactive and get that marketing program underway and control your destiny. It’s foolish to think that all your customers will take it upon themselves to do your promotion for you, unless you enjoy negative publicity. I know if I had a disastrous experience in your store, you and all my other readers, would be seeing it here in my next article. Oops!

I’ve been advising and counseling businesses on their Yellow Page advertising since 1976. During that period, I’ve placed ads in every media imaginable and consulted to over 7000 businesses. With those credentials, I feel capable and confident in recommending the easiest way to achieve a more successful marketing program. Whether it’s a newspaper, magazine, Yellow Page ad, or direct mailer, the headline is always king. It not only is the first thing seen, it sets the tone for the entire promotion that follows. Yet creating one, is the critical procedure that’s often overlooked. I’ve seen the typical “Tire Experts,” or the “Low-Cost Leaders,” enough to fall soundly asleep. Every business assumes they have the best service or products at the best prices. If that is the case, then why shop and compare at all? The headline should capture the imagination and giver one pause to consider the message that is making the business unique in the industry. But you’re not a copywriter or ad man, so what can you do? Well, you could start with these headlines that follow as a jumping-off point and examples of what might work in various situations. Each is designed to get attention and a reaction. Increase ROI through Split and Multivariate Testing

If you can measure it, you can improve it. That is the maxim of online testing. Those who test their advertising campaigns can see ROI double, or even triple. Testing will increase conversion rates. There is no such thing as “good enough.” You should always be testing and improving your campaigns.

Every element of an online marketing campaign is measurable. Test your PPC ads, landing pages, and email campaigns. Testing results in actionable data that will show up in your bottom line. Split testing and multivariate testing are the two main forms online testing will take.

Split Testing

Split Testing, also known as A/B testing, is the simplest form of testing. Google AdWords, Yahoo Search Marketing, and most providers of email marketing services have split testing capabilities built right into their campaign interfaces.

Split Testing is randomly dividing visitors into two groups and showing each a different version of your PPC ad, landing page, or email. The objective is to see which version performs better in terms of conversion, CTR (click-through-rate), lead generation, or some other target.

Email campaigns are easily tested. Send one version of email to half the leads on your list, and another version to the other half. Use a subset of your list for testing, and then apply the results to the rest of the list. You can use split testing in this way to find the best layout, ad copy, and headlines for you email.

Split Testing an AdWords Campaign

Google AdWords makes split testing of ad copy easy. Simply create two different ads to driving traffic to the same page and see which one gets a higher CTR. It is important to turn off the optimize feature in the AdWords campaign settings so that both ads get an equal number of impressions.

Another way of to AB test with AdWords is to have the same PPC ad go to two different landing pages. This allows you to split test elements in the landing page for conversion or some other performance indicator. Make sure the two pages are significantly different if you use this method. Search engines frown on duplicate data and may penalize you for it.

Although split testing is simple and effective, it also has drawbacks. Number one is that you need thousands of impressions and hundreds of conversions or click-through actions in order to achieve statistical confidence. The other setback is the ability to test only one element at a time. Testing more than one element can take a lot of time and traffic.

Multivariate Testing
Multivariate testing is the testing of more than one element or variable at a time. This form of testing allows you to test several elements at once and find the individual elements that bring the best results, as well as the combination of elements that will give you the best possible outcome. It allows you to find which elements matter and which combinations are strongest in a relatively short amount of time.

Multivariate testing can give you the best bang for your buck, and the testing algorithm automatically determines the best page design for all possible combinations of elements.

Testing at this level requires sophisticated statistical analysis. Unless you are a coder with and advanced math degree from MIT, you are better off using an off the shelf application or provider. Most providers of multivariate testing are proud of their work and cater to enterprises with deep marketing pockets. The exception is the Google Website Optimizer. It provides all the power of these other applications but beats them on price. It’s free.

Conclusion and Resources

Testing takes the guesswork out of marketing campaigns and allows you to make continual refinements that will increase your ROI. Implement a thoughtful testing program and you’ll be amazed at what works and how little things can make a huge difference. But most of all you’ll be amazed at the difference it can make in your bottom line.

Nearly 30 years ago, I was a guest panelist at a seminar about "Writing for Profit." -- All day long, the speakers had told the attendees all about how to submit their written works to editors and publishers ... what to expect in a publisher's contract ... how to prepare a writer's proposal ... primarily focusing on how to "sell" what the attendees had written.

At the end of the seminar, a panel of five "successful writers" ... including me ... was introduced, with a list of each writer's works and their individual accomplishments given.

The first few questions from the audience were nothing more than a rehash of some of the information provided during the day. Then, a young man stood-up in the back and said ...

"All day long, you've been telling us how to sell our written works - but - how do you learn how to write to begin with?"

After the other panelists finished recommending english composition classes; espousing the merits of good grammar and syntax; and advising him to "just keep writing, you'll get better," it was my turn.

My answer was ... as usual ... short and to the point ...

"Read!"

Then, I had to explain what I meant.

If you want to be a Science Fiction writer, read every science fiction short story and novel you can find. Immerse yourself in the type of writing you want to do. Spend 80% of your time reading and 20% of your time writing "sequels" to the stories you have read.

Today, the young man who asked the question is a highly-paid writer ... with a host of articles and books to his credit. -- Last time I spoke to him, he thanked me again for my simple advice.

With that said, I am now going to answer those of you who have persisted in asking me ...

How To Write Better Ad-Copy

Right now, you're probably thinking, "Now he's gonna tell us to read all the books we can find on copywriting."

Wrong, paperback-breathe! -- The first thing I'm gonna tell you is -- after you've read all those copywriting books for general knowledge; like learning english composition, grammar and syntax -- throw away those books and ...

Read The Ads!

That's right. -- If you are going to write an ad to sell your "fancy-dancy fishhooks," gather together every ad you can find that offers fishhooks, fishing lures, fishing poles, or, even, fishing boats. -- Read them ... reread them ... and read them some more. -- Don't even try to do any writing. Just read the ads!

Again, you're probably thinking, "That's old hat. Everybody tells us to keep a swipe-file of ads offering products similar to our own, then use those ads to write our own ads."

Wrong, again, copycat-litter-breathe! -- If you only use your swipe-file to makeup copycat ads, you will be committing ...

The Biggest Mistake Made By Beginning Ad-Copywriters!

Unfortunately, most beginning ad-copywriters take a successful ad ... offering a product similar to their own ... and simply change a few words in the headline, rewrite and rearrange the paragraphs, maybe put in an extra "bonus" of some kind, and try to use it to sell their product.

Think about it! -- That would be like copying "Moby Dick" by changing the whale to a great-white buffalo ... moving the action from the ocean to the great plains ... and making Captain Ahab a Buffalo Hunter with a missing arm. (Don't laugh. It's been done ... starring Charles Bronson, if memory serves.) -- No matter how well done, it would still only be an imperfect imitation.

In the business opportunity field, one of the most successful ads of all time was Joe Karbo's "Lazy Man's Way To Riches" ad. -- Can you imagine how many times that ad has been adapted, rearranged and enhanced to sell someone else's opportunity information? -- Some of the adaptations may have had some success but, just a few weeks before he died, Joe Karbo himself lamented to me that none of his copycat-ads; copycatting his own ad, had ever been successful.

Do the same thing I told the young would-be writer to do to learn to write, spend 80% of your time "reading" ads offering products similar to your own. Then ...

Spend 20% of your time writing "sequels" to those ads.

The dictionary says a "sequel" is "A literary work complete in itself but continuing the narrative of an earlier work."

Where most of the ads that just copycatted Joe Karbo's "Lazy Man's Way To Riches" ad were failures, or only had limited success, over the years I have written no less than five "sequel" ads that produced significant revenue for me. (One of them is the ad for my "How To STRIKE IT RICH" book.) -- I never tried to ‘copy' Joe's ad, just continue his narrative to a different conclusion ... my product.

Use your swipe-file the same way. -- Read and reread those ads until you have a complete story of the similar products being sold. Set those ads aside and don't even think about looking at them while you write your own ad. -- Don't try to ‘copy' the ads you've read ...

Write a "sequel."

Let your ad-copy continue from where the other ads ended.

If you aren't happy with your first results, do it all over again ... read the ads again ... set them aside again ... write your "sequel" again. -- Keep looking for more and more ads offering similar products to add to your story line ... immerse yourself in those kinds of ads ... to the point of drowning in ad copy. Then, lay those ads aside and write your "sequel" ads.

As your "sequels" get better and better, your income will get bigger and bigger.

Now, I'm gonna tell you ...

The Greatest Unwritten Secret to Successful Ad-Copywriting!

Use The Words In Your Ad To Attract The Kind Of Customers You Want To Keep

The best way to explain what I mean is by illustration. -- Here are two different headlines for an "opportunity" ad ...

Earn $10,000 Per Month

Get $10,000 Per Month

It may appear, at first reading, that both headlines offer the same type of opportunity - but - read them closely.

The first headline begins with the word "Earn." -- To the reader, that means some "job" or "work" must be performed in order to "earn" the $10,000 promised.

Compare that to the second headline which starts with the word "Get." -- That leads the reader to believe that little, if any, "work" is involved in "getting" the $10,000.

Believe it or don't ... the readers don't even realize that they are making that subtle distinction. Their reaction to the headline is ingrained in their "subconscious."

Using the word "Earn" you will attract the kind of customers who don't have a subconscious aversion to work. -- Using the word "Get" you will attract more people who are looking for something for nothing ... by "getting" their share of the "free lunch" that might just exist.

Which brings me to an observation about ...

Ad-Copywriting Books

Over the past 30 years, I have watched an ever-increasing proliferation of books about ad-copywriting. Unfortunately, all too many of those books are just compiled from older, well-written books on the subject - but - with one BIG difference.

The compilers of those books believe that, in order to "sell" something, you have to "trick" the buyer into buying. So, they take legitimate advertising techniques and read into them an implied deception. In effect, the assorted fools who compile books corrupting viable advertising principals lend credence to the journalistic attitude that advertising, by its very nature, is evil.

Although I am adamantly opposed to book burning ... any book about ad-writing that espouses any use of misleading words, deceptive phrasing, fictitious or nebulous testimonials, meaningless hype, or the egregious use of meritless guarantees belongs in your backyard incinerator, not in your business library.

If you have to "trick" your customers into buying from you, neither you nor your product deserve anything other than my contempt.

Okay, so you're looking for an affiliate program that actually works for YOU? There are of course many ways to go about doing this, but I would say the most simple way would be by making a comparison chart.

You have the compare programs and decide which one will be the most profitable for you. Compare payouts, compare payment frequency, compare how trusted the network is with their payments, and probably the most important one to consider is CONVERSION RATIO.

If you send three hundred people to that page and it doesn't convert into any sales guess what? You need to switch to promoting something else. Some sites are able to convert 1/20 visitors into buyers (mine, as an example). These are the things you have to think about as a potential affiliate.

One thing that is, surprisingly, overlooked as well yet is HUGE in making money as an affiliate marketing. Your niche. The niche you are marketing to should be carefully selected. We talk about conversion ratios and this stems from the people that you deliver to the site actually being interested in the topic. Give me one visitor that's into my niche over twenty that aren't any day. These turn into sales, and in turn, money in your pocket.

So make a pros and cons list, or a comparison chart. Far too many people that I see just blindly go into whichever affiliate program they see without really thinking it through or comparing other programs. This step truly is a much bigger part of your success than you realize right now. If you don't pick the proper affiliate program for your needs then you will die like the rest of the failed affiliates. I cannot stress that point to you enough.

I found out a trend that seems to be common with some affiliate marketers but which may on the long run not profit them since the merchants are never happy with such behaviours and tend not to renew their relationships with such affiliates. I hope you will not fall into this category since it does not augur well for you on the long run.

What trend am I talking about? I am talking about those of you who try to set up different websites numbering about 20 or even 40 on various topics with each one having some 300 -500 or more pages per website all because you want to earn a lot of money through Google Adsense on each website as well as the affiliate commissions on the various products that you will be promoting on the various pages. The question you should be asking yourself is "Is the style worthwhile on the long run?" And then there is the next question "Is this sustainable?"

In this kind of setup, you either have decided to churn out some automated load of keyword rich blabagulah that will become stale in a short while or you have a very big army of some article writers and designers whom you have locked away somewhere in your basement to handle the regular work needed to update these large chunk of sites and pages for you. In case the second option is what you have going for you, it is either you are rich enough to pay all these 'employees' of yours or they are some mediocres who do not have other options as to how to get themselves empowered or worse still, you are one of those modern day 'hostage takers'. Or is it 'hostage keepers?'

But then, let's be serious here friends. This affiliate marketing business is all about churning out sites with regularly updated quality contents that would make sense to the consumers and not a matter of quantity. Check out those sites that have high rankings on Google and you will find out that one of their common characteristics is that they have sites that not only dish out solid quality stuff but also do so on a regular basis. I am sure you must have noticed this but if you have not yet done so, please do now. There is no need to mention those sites here.

You can afford to play games with some of the spiders in order for them to index your sites for a short while but I can tell you that they will catch up with your tricks in no distant time and you will end up the loser in the game if you continue that way. Online Affiliate Programs - How to Pick The Right One

So you are on a quest to find an internet affiliate program. You like the fact that they handle all the orders, take care of the shipping, and collect payment from the customer. All you do is market your affiliate website and get a cheque from them every month. Nice and simple. The trouble is there is just so many to choose from and they all are boasting loudly. For the most part you have to get past all the advertising which borders on lying and get to the truth behind the company. The following is a list of things to check for so you can make a wise choice.

#1 How many years has the company been in business. I wouldn't go near any company that hasn't been around for at least 10 years. Why? Because you may be signing up with a company deep in the red and about to go under. I am ashamed to say it but it has happened to me. All because I didn't check them out thoroughly. I don't understand all this hype about "pre-launch" and "get in now before we launch". To me that just means they are unproven and unstable.

#2 Personally if you can't pick up the phone and talk directly to Julie or Sally who works in the front office I would run for the hills. Flashing scam bells and whistles should go off in your head if you get an answering machine all the time. Sadly this is all too true on the internet. There should also be a physical address where the main office is that you could drive to one Sunday if you felt like it.

#3 Just how popular are their products that they market. Stay away from some new thing that the world just can't do without. Chances are the world will do without it and you will left holding the bag of purple widgets you thought everyone would buy. The more products they have the better. They should be selling things that sell well in the real world and are already well established out there.

#4 Is the company a member of the Better Business Bureau. The better the reputation they have the better you should feel. I actually know of a program out there right now (which I won't say which one it is to protect the people involved) that people haven't checked out to well because one of the co-founders of the company actually has 42 Better Business Bureau complaints against him resulting from previous scams he had run. This should kill your enthusiasm and you should not be saying things like "maybe he has turned over a new leaf" or "I'll just pretend I didn't know that and carry on in this anyway". It amazes me how people can be duped like this when they ought to just cut their losses and start over.

#5 How extensive is the back office training. Do you have a mentor who is willing to help you and is his success tied to yours. Fire off a few emails to your future mentor and see if he gives a rip or if he is just trying to sell you something and say goodbye. Personally I like this type of affiliate program because it makes everyone accountable.

#6 Watch out for affiliate companies that only take one kind of payment. The more kinds of payment they accept the better. Why? Because if that payment processor should decide they don't like XYZ affiliate company (for whatever reason they may have invented) that whole affiliate company will go down with your investment. Personally I don't like companies that won't pay you by a cheque in the mail just because I have seen this very thing happen a few times.

#7 Your future affiliate program should be a free affiliate program to join but if you do pay something you should also be able to get out after a reasonable amount of time with your money back. Another good thing to look for is a discussion forum where you can login and learn about questions or problems other affiliates are having with the program. This can be very intuitive and give you an inside view before you get too involved.

A good commission should be paid monthly with no more than $20 limit for payout. Above all the products should be good and targeted to your particular market / niche.

Pre sell, do not sell: One of the big mistakes affiliates do is try to sell their Sponsor's product. They send the visitor to their sponsor's page where they will be confronted by a second sales page. Double selling will deter people from buying. Warm your visitor to the sale by pre selling and let your sponsor's sales page do the selling.

Remember when you are able to attract potential customers, they have one thing in mind - 'what's in it for me' (will this solve the problem I have). The only way you can answer that is to focus on the product's benefits and not its features.

But let me ask you, how can you presell focusing on the benefits if you have not bought the product personally?

Build your business as well as your sponsor's: You are sending all these potential customers to your sponsor and building his customer list. In order to build your businesses have a way to capture these potential customers yourself. Offer a free newsletter on your site and build your own subscriber list.

Have your own website and drive targeted traffic to it: Do not rely on your Sponsor's mirror site. Have a theme website of your own. You will be able to set up your own newsletter there and have multiple related affiliate products. The trick is to drive large amounts of traffic to your website and pre sell them to get the click through to your sponsor's site.

When you have your own website, don't confuse your visitors by attempting to 'presell' 20 products on the same page - how is this going to solve their problem.

Think about it, if the product is worth everything you are going to say it is, doesn't it deserve a page all to itself???

Use these points to build your affiliate marketing enterprise. You will gradually increase your business and your profits.

Exchanging links - weather you do it manually or use a service for it - is mainly to gain more link popularity - thus gaining positions in the search engines. This is perhaps the most common way of improving your page rank, and it's very effective. But, a side effect most webmasters don't think of is the traffic they attract while doing so.

If you are using a link exchange service to exchange links, you can - and should - try to take advantage of all the webmasters coming to your site and/or link pages. This is where you will have the opportunity to add well chosen affiliate links. This page should actually BE a link page, and I encourage you to actually utilize the service and exchange some links. If you ask for a link exchange with every site listed, you should find yourself with thousands of webmasters looking at your link page to evaluate if they want to accept your exchange request.

If you want to take this one step further, it is possible to further target the visitors by making several link pages - each with a more narrow advertisement, and choosing what page to show for each link request. Because you know what their site is about, you can find and add affiliate links on a detailed level.

Choosing the correct affiliate programs for this is easy, but it can take some time to get it perfected though. The best way of evaluating it is by using different affiliate programs on different link pages. Look in your web statistics and compare the traffic on each link page with the amount of sales or clicks to the affiliate programs, then choose the ones with the best conversion rate.

Most people have plenty of interests, hobbies or are book-smart enough to build a small, yet profitable site built with affiliate programs, targeting that particular area. A small, non-competitive niche is exactly what the new affiliate marketer needs. The experienced derived from this first site, can prove valuable when trying to target a more competitive niche.

Just as the Internet has brought the information closer to people, it has made every bit of information likely to have readers. No matter how obscure the topic, people will always try to find interesting information. Many sports make for excellent sites, if you are a big fan of a soccer- or football team; why not make a blog about it? If the team is large enough - and you target clever keywords - you will have visitors reading your text, and hopefully clicking an ad or two. Some of the most visited web pages about sports are just blogs, and most of them do very well using affiliate programs to make money online.

Finding an affiliate program in small niches may or may not be hard, but if you find a good one, you will almost always make more with a traditional program, than you would with contextual advertising.

With affiliate programs, you are able to present your visitors with products you decide fitting for them, with contextual ads, the script does this for you. While this is (or should be) highly relevant ads, you still lack the control over the specific ads. With sites in small niches - or with low amount of traffic - the importance of higher commissions are necessary to keep the site profitable. Getting only a few cents per click will not cut it if you only have a few visitors per day, but if you can present them all with a product they want, you can make quite a bit of money.

It's up to you to decide what products are likely to be of interest to your viewers, but don't be afraid to experiment. Try new or additional affiliate programs or try some contextual ads once you have some traffic. Find out what suits your site best; every site - and every niche - is unique.

Affiliates, Are You Maximising The Benefits Of Forum Memberships?

Forums, especially those which focus on a specific niche, are a great way of promoting you and your website(s). Apart from other benefits, they can provide the means to get noticed quickly and drive traffic to your site. As long as you behave yourself!

We all know that good reputations can take ages to build and be dashed in a second. Don't underestimate the value and the power of a forum. Long serving members are proud to be so, most are willing to help newcomers especially if they have shown that they can also add value through their contributions. More of that in a second.

However, posting just for the sake of posting to get recognized will certainly create the wrong impression, will not do your reputation any favours, and so when you do have something important to say or are genuinely looking for help, you may not get the outcome you are looking for.

O.K. on some of the larger forums, you may get away with it for a while but on the more tightly knit smaller forums, I doubt it very much.

So, always join with the best intentions in mind and you will be paid back in kind.

If you are unfamiliar with forums, don't worry, all of us are to begin with. Moreover, there are two very easy ways to become familiar with those you are interested in...

Always read the Terms and Conditions of membership. There are commonalities for sure but I recommend that you are totally familiar with a forum's specific rules, not just in general but also any rules that apply to the different sections within a forum. This way, you know your posts and contributions will always comply.

Another easy but excellent means to get to know the forum and its members is simply to read some of the posts. Look at the views/replies attached to the posts and select a few that have proved to be highly interesting and you will definitely get a good feel of how that forum operates.

Keep things simple in the beginning...

When you sign up, I suggest you use your name instead of some fancy or trendy nickname. You are looking to create a professional portrait and image about you and your business so be upfront and over time you and not your nickname will be associated with your contributions.

Introduce yourself to everyone with a short description of who you are, your background and how much you are looking forward to contributing and meeting other members. It is more than likely that you'll get a whole bunch of welcoming replies. Always be polite and friendly. Reply thanking everyone.

Where's the benefit in that?

When you set up your first post, you will have had the opportunity to add a bio that appears with all your posts. So, think about it. If your introduction was interesting and matched the interests of other members there is every possibility that they will also click on the website link you have included in your bio - free traffic to your site!

Notice I said link to your website, NOT an affiliate link. Most forums do not like this and it will be spelled out in their terms.

Anyway, why would you even want to link directly to the supplier's or merchant's site, they'll get the traffic and you won't. Duh!

The next benefit comes in building your reputation - don't blow it.

Build your presence by replying to posts already made as long as you have something worthwhile to say. By their very nature forums exist to allow us to express our opinions. Do not be afraid to argue a point or go against the flow as long as your argument is based on fact and is written in that way.

If you have spent time reading other posts as I've suggested, you will have seen how arguments and counter arguments have been dealt with before.

The key is to give before you receive. One neat way of doing this is to select posts that have few or no replies and if you have some valid point to make, make it. Chances are the person who made the original post will remember that and reciprocate when you begin to make your own posts.

We are coming to one of the biggest benefits of all but before we do that, let's give some more first.

Where there are current posts by other members asking for help and especially asking for feedback on their website, take the time to provide feedback - again - as long as it is constructive and makes sense. Remember each reply you make is read by everyone, not just the recipient. As mentioned before, don't reply just to get noticed. However, don't hold back just because your suggestion(s) have already been made. Agree with that member and elaborate on it when you can.

All of this can do your reputation and presence a lot of good which all helps when you are looking for help and want members to review you website.

This can be a huge benefit. Just be prepared to accept the inputs you receive after all that's why you asked for the review. It is likely that most members will say something positive as well as offer suggestions for improvement. Even the smallest idea offered by a fellow member can make a significant difference to the overall effectiveness of your website.

When you are fortunate and get a steady stream of replies, always reply regularly thanking those who have helped and then later, when you start to see the real improvement based on the suggestions made, post again pointing out how you have been helped and the difference that has been achieved. It may be traffic, it may be sales, it may subscribers; let the forum know without bragging that you are now more successful as a result.

So, tell me, if by contributing to the forum(s) of your choice, you increase your traffic, your sales or your subscriptions, is it worth it?

Remember when you discovered the possibility of making money promoting affiliate websites? Do you remember when you discovered that you could start by creating a ClickBank (or some other) account and selecting your first program or two to promote? I do. I also remember what it was like to see my own affiliate nickname on my first affiliate link. I put that link in my browser and viewed it as my link and life was good because that was my link.

Later on, I saw other affiliates online promoting the same program that I was promoting. I saw another person's link in my browser and wondered "What would happen if I edited this link to look like mine?" So, I replaced the nickname (or affiliate id) with mine and suddenly that link became my link. Cool, huh? No! It took a while for me to realize that I was looking at a leaking pipe. If links could be changed this easily, commissions could be hijacked by simply editing the affiliate id. That was a problem!

The first possible solution for me was to change markets (maybe sell stuff on eBay or something). Then, I figured that if I had a leaking pipe, I'd better call a plumber. So, I did some research on the internet and came up with a solution that I'd like to share with anyone who may have the same concerns that I have about affiliate link security. I didn't know anything about affiliate link cloaking or security until I began to search. But now I do.

There's enough revenue out there for everyone. We should never have to resort to stealing from each other! Check out the Super Affiliate Link Manager. Affiliate marketing comes with more than its fair share of hype, and that exaggeration occurs on multiple levels. In order to make affiliate marketing work as effectively as possible, it’s necessary to find a way to look past the bloviation and hyperbole. After that, it’s equally important not to contribute to it.

High hype online sales pitches are the natural online extension of the brick and mortar “hard sell.” The advantages of a product are pumped and pumped to the point of bursting while any potential limitations or drawbacks remain unmentioned. This is nothing new. People from door-to-door vacuum reps to used car salespeople have been doing it for years. It’s found its way, in one form or another, into most any business.

In the online world, however, the hyperbolic approach seems to be even more effective. No one really believes that a used car will change his or her life for the better in a truly meaningful way. However, plenty of people searching for online business opportunities do know that fortunes have been made on the web in short periods. Every dollar we spend on our business is a dollar less we take home. We all like to run tight ships and keep expenses down to a minimum. We regularly look for ways to improve the bottom line by eliminating or reducing expenses. We won’t consciously cut corners in a way that compromises quality or integrity, but every other sunk cost is fair game. After all, one of the greatest benefits of being an affiliate marketer is the low overhead. No products to stock, no retail space to lease. Keeping costs low is all part of the plan.

It can also lead to disaster. That’s because too many affiliate marketers have a difficult time distinguishing between expenses that can be reduced and critical expenditures that are actually great business investments. Let’s look at a few costs that we should mentally recast as investments.

Outside talent. Unless you have found a way to combine vast knowledge with some way of stretching time, you probably rely, at least in part, on outside talent to help you get things done. You might hire a copywriter to put together that perfect ad for the next newsletter. You might snag a freelance coder to help you with the back end of your site. You might have a graphics design expert at your disposal when you need the perfect header. The expertise of this “extended family” gives you the opportunity to do the things you do best and to produce quality results. Improved performance and better time management offset the money you spend on outside help.

If you compromise too much in this area in order to save a few bucks, you risk reliability problems, performance issues, and the prospect of having to do the “whole thing” over again. Take care of your outsourced labor and maintain good relationships with critical suppliers.

Product purchases. Sometimes it seems as if the best possible target demographic for an informational product is other sellers of informational products! Affiliate marketers don’t just sell, they buy. Some of them might wonder if they don’t buy a little too much. While it doesn’t make sense to invest in every new piece of marketing software or every single ebook discussing new ways to increase sales, your purchases in this area can be valuable investments in knowledge.

Doctors and lawyers have continuing education programs in order to stay on top of advances in their fields. Other professionals have special certifications and training courses. Affiliate marketers, on the other hand, are left to their own devices in terms of increasing their knowledge base. The smartest, and most successful, marketers won’t compromise on obtaining the best possible new information and products to help them do their jobs. You can’t buy everything, but you can’t afford to clutch your wallet too tightly as new trends and advances march on by you.

Go ahead and trim expenses in order to improve your bottom line. However, don’t carve too much off critical areas including outsourced expertise and continuing education. Pay your experts and buy the best products. Those are investments in your success, not expenses to be eliminated!

Affiliate Marketing: Searching Keywords vs. Buying Keywords

Here’s something every affiliate marketer should understand. All keywords aren’t created equal. Some are worth a lot more than others.

I can hear you now. “No kidding. Everyone knows that!” Fine, the idea that some keywords are more valuable than others may not be a great new revelation. What might surprise you is how you should be differentiating between the power keywords and the also-rans.

Before you click away from this article, realize that the difference between the best keywords and the dead-enders has nothing to do with search volume.

Surprised? I thought so. Most people think of keyword value in terms of search volume. If millions of people are going to Google to look for “widgets” every day, it would be nice to own the top slot for “widgets”, right?

Of course. However, snagging traffic on the basis of “widgets” might not be that easy. Ever affiliate marketer in the universe will be going after those high competition terms. Additionally, a relatively scant percentage of “widget” searchers will be serious potential buyers. There may be a lot of people out there searching for “widget” or “widgets”, but not all of them are in a shopping mood.

So, by the time you duke it out for that high-volume keyword and then deal with a relatively small conversion percentage, you’re apt to discover the difference between awesome keywords and duds has little to do with search volume.

Two people sit down to do a Google search. One types “widget”. The other types “where to find a good red widget”. Which of those searchers would you prefer to send to a sales page? Obviously, the second searcher is much more likely to make a widget purchase than the first.

So, even though “where to find a good red widget” may not secure a million searches per day, it converts so much more than the generic keyword. Oh, and a smart affiliate marketer can own a top slot in the SERPs for it rather easily.

Less work. Higher conversions. It makes sense.

Those lesser-used keywords are buying keywords. They’re the ones that will get you big checks in the mail from affiliate programs. The high-volume terms are search keywords. They’ll get more traffic, but won’t produce sales like the buying keywords will.

There’s a marketing theory that’s been applied to search engine use and keyword selection known as “the long tail”. The idea is that it’s easier to own those smaller volume terms and the net effect of targeting the right ones will swamp the income potential of going after the bigger search term.

If you can learn how to apply that theory to your affiliate marketing business, you’ll be able to experience success that will escape all of those other affiliates who are still focused merely on search volume.

Don’t worry about the search keywords. Go after the buying keywords!

“Increase quality or bid $5.00 to activate” – Solutions For Google Adwords

If you’ve ever done a Google Adwords campaign, you might have come across this message for one of your keyword which reads “Increase quality or bid $5.00 to activate.” First, let’s look at the reason for this. When Google looks at any placement, it looks at relevancy (perceived relevancy in this case) as discussed in previous Marketing Insight ezines.

The reason you have gotten this message is that Google feels that your ad does not relate to the keyword - so it de-activates that keyword. What this message is also saying is that, if you don’t know how to use Google Adwords, you should be paying 5 times more than necessary. So what do you do? WHAT NOT TO DO: Google make fortunes from people who are so desperate to have their ad shown on that keyword that they agree to the given price. That is a huge mistake and will cost you big. Imagine your lead cost going up by 5 times for that keyword! Here are two better options for you: 1.) Remove the keyword from that campaign and place it into another ad group that is more relevant or create an ad group campaign that has the keyword in the headline. This is what you should have done from the beginning - group related keywords together so they make sense. Here are some examples: • GROUPING THE WRONG WAY – keywords like Home Business, Earn Money, Online Business, Make Money Fast with an ad that reads “Make $20,000/mo From Home”. The problem is, even though the ad might be good, the keywords are too different and do not match the ad, therefore your ad is being de-activated. • GROUPING THE RIGHT WAY – The right way to do it is to set up 3 separate ad groups for the above keywords and add related, similar keywords to it like this – Home Business, Home Based Business, Business from Home, etc. – The ad would read – “Best Home Based Business” or “$1,000/Day-Home Business” (some of the keywords are in the title) Create another ad group for your other keywords like - Earn Money, Earn Money from Home, Earn Extra Money, etc. Your ad would include some if not all keywords in the title like – “Earn Money Fast”, “Earn Money While Sleeping” “Earn $3,000/Day”, etc. In other words, when you have the keywords matching the selection of words used in your ad, and your keywords appear in the headline, your ad will rarely be deactivated. You just accomplished two things…not only will you not have to pay the higher price , instead, more likely, your cpc will drop even lower than what you paid before they asked you to increase your bid. Plus your click rate is even higher because the ad is more relevant. 2.) The other thing you can do is just delete the keyword for a few days and put it back up. Most likely, you’ll be back to the original bid price. Bottom line, Google will reward you for relevancy and will charge you extra for generality. It means with some small modifications to your website that you can achieve higher results in search engines than your lesser SEO savvy competitors.

In this article I explain what SEO is and I take you through some of the most important Search Engine Optimisation techniques to help improve your website search engine rankings.

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
SEO is search engine optimisation. Essentially Search Engine Optimisation is the art of creating or modifying a website to make it search engine friendly. Search engines are the gateway to gaining huge amounts of website traffic. Imagine if you sold Blue Widgets, then placing as number 1 in a search for "Blue Widgets" would gain you far more traffic than placing number 100 - This should be obvious. To gain rankings and places in the search results your website needs to be better search optimised than the websites that are currently showing above yours in the search results. The more search engine friendly that your website is, then the greater the chance that the search engines will rank you more highly. By using certain SEO techniques you will increase your website in the rankings and hence increase your website traffic. This is why SEO is probably the most important thing about having a website - after all, you can have a very good website but what is the point if no one visits it and buys your product?

Search Engine Optimisation Techniques
SEO can be performed site wide but the way we do this is by using the same SEO techniques on each page one at a time. So although it is common to say a website is search engine optimised in fact we mean that each page of the website is search optimised. Okay, so it should be clear now that SEO for your website is vital for your websites success online. Now, the question is how do we start optimising a website? As there are so many SEO techniques that we could implement in this article I take you through the three that are generally considered the most important by SEO experts.

Search Engine Optimization Technique 1: Identifying Keywords and Key phrases
This step sets the scene for the web page we are about to optimise. We need to do some research using keyword tools, like Google Adwords and Overture Inventory keyword tools. Using these two tools we can input our main term used on the current page we are trying to optimise. We should record the results from these and then order by search volume. We then weed out any irrelevant terms and are left with a list of highly searched and highly relevant terms to this page.

Search Engine Optimization Technique 2: Titles
It is common opinion among SEO professionals that the Title of a webpage is THE single most important SEO aspect of a webpage. The title of the webpage is the first thing a search engine views and tries to interpret. It is vital to ensure that the title is unique across your whole website and that it is highly related and relevant to the content of the webpage. We like to use between 4-10 words in the title tag and we always use the leftward rule. Leftward rule is where the most important words are closer to the left. In this case, the most highly searched on terms we identified in SEO technique 1.

Search Engine Optimization Technique 3: Duplicating Web Page Content
Often websites reproduce information that is copied from other websites. This is a very bad thing to do and search engines are so smart now that they check to duplicated content both within the same website and across all websites pages within their index. It is very important to ensure your website has unique content across the whole Internet. You can write unique articles or howto's or you can find someone who will write unique content for you. If you currently find that a lot of your pages are listed in the supplemental index on Google then making sure the titles, descriptions, meta keywords and all of your on page content is unique is how you would pull them out of the supplemental index.

Selecting the right keywords can be one of the most important aspects of search engine marketing. This is equally important for search engine optimization and for pay per click search engine marketing.

In my last article, Part 1 of this series, I discussed several free methods to use to evaluate keywords and end up with a list that will work the best for your business. Most people can come up with a list of keywords, but the trick is then to know which ones are going to be useful to you.

The free tools you can use to evaluate the importance or value of the keywords are:

1. The monthly number of searches on the Yahoo network, shown by their online tool
2. The number of people using those keywords to find your site over the last few months
3. Your ranking for those keywords on Google
4. The Google Page Rank of the top site on Google for that keyword
5. The type of sites coming up on organic or paid search listings for that keyword

In the last article I discussed items 1-3 above. Now I’ll discuss items 4-5.

The Google Page Rank of the Top Site on Google for That keyword

This is what I call the “reality check” tool. There is a toolbar you can download from Google that will show the Page Rank of any site showing in the browser. The Page Rank is a ranking system developed by Google to show the relative importance of a given site or page. The tool shows a bar graph, and if you mouse over it, it shows the number. The scale is from 1-10.

So for this step, I go to Google and enter the key phrase, hit enter and see what comes up. Then I go to the first site that comes up in the regular, or organic search results (not the sponsored listings at the top in yellow or on the right), and see what the Page Rank is for that site. Enter that number in column five.

Here is the significance of this. If the top site for a given keyword has a high Page Rank, that means that they are a well established site and have done some serious search engine optimization, have a lot of links to them, etc. For our purposes we will define a high Page Rank as 5 or higher. Especially if your site is new or you have never done any SEO work, I would not recommend selecting a keyword where the top site has a Page Rank of 5 or higher. You won’t be able to effectively compete for that keyword. You need to find keywords where the top sites have lower Page Ranks, so you as a new site coming into that market can compete more easily. That’s mainly for SEO. For pay per click, this method doesn’t matter as much.

So go through your entire list, go to Google and enter each keyword, go to the top site coming up on regular (non-paid) search, note the Page Rank, then mark that on your spreadsheet.

The Type of Sites Coming Up on Organic or Paid Search Listings for That Keyword

For this method, you go to Google and/or Yahoo and see what types of listings are coming up for each keyword. This is important because it gives you an idea of what the people typing in that keyword are seeing when the listings come up.

The major importance here is to see if the other listings show that you would be reaching the right type of public with that keyword. For example, one client of mine is a recruiting company, and they wanted to target companies looking to hire people. They already had tons of job applicants, but they needed more companies wanting to hire. So by using this method we could see that some of the keywords we were looking at were bringing up listings geared to job applicants. And others were geared more towards companies doing hiring, which were the ones we wanted.

It’s good to use this method just to check and make sure you’re on the right track and targeting the right public with that keyword. Write down a very brief summary of the types of ads you see in the spreadsheet.

Final Evaluation

Now that you have all the data in your spreadsheet, you can now go through the list and select the keywords you want to target. You might first want to go through and eliminate the ones you don’t want, and highlight them in some color like red or pink or something. Then go back and start selecting the ones you want and highlight them in green.

How to Evaluate This Data for Pay Per Click Campaigns

Remember that at the beginning of this article we named the several methods we would use to evaluate keywords:

1. The monthly number of searches on the Yahoo network, shown by their online tool
2. The number of people using those keywords to find your site over the last few months
3. Your ranking for those keywords on Google
4. The Google Page Rank of the top site on Google for that keyword
5. The type of sites coming up on organic or paid search listings for that keyword

For a pay per click search engine marketing campaign, you mostly want to have keywords that have high traffic. So the monthly number of searches which you got from the Yahoo/Overture network will be one of the most valuable pieces of information.

You want to stay away from single word key words and go more for 2, 3, 4 or more word phrases, as research shows that the people typing in these are more in the buying phase and not in the lookie-loo phase.

The number of people who are using that phrase to find your site is of some importance here, but not as much as the Yahoo/Overture search numbers.

The Google ranking and Page Rank of the top site have no real relevance for selecting keywords for pay per click. However, #5 above may be important to you, depending on what public you’re targeting.

How to Evaluate This Data for Search Engine Optimization

The methods once again are:

1. The monthly number of searches on the Yahoo network, shown by their online tool
2. The number of people using those keywords to find your site over the last few months
3. Your ranking for those keywords on Google
4. The Google Page Rank of the top site on Google for that keyword
5. The type of sites coming up on organic or paid search listings for that keyword

For search engine optimization, it’s a different game from pay per click and the types of keywords you want to emphasize are likely going to be different.

However, once again the number of Yahoo/Overture searches is still the first criteria you want to look at. You want to select keywords that get a decent number of people searching for them each month.

But, especially if you have a site that has not had any SEO done for it yet, you do NOT want to select keywords that have too high a number of searches. This may sounds contradictory. But the thing is that as a new site, you will generally not be able to compete effectively for keywords with 50,000 searches. There will be a fair amount of competition for those keywords, which you will also see on method #4, the Google Page Rank of the top sites.

The number of people using that keyword to find your site now is important, because that means you’re likely already ranking on the search engines for that keyword and it is bringing in public to your site. We’ll assume for now that it’s the right public.

So #2 and #3 above are similar. They are an indication that you are doing something right, and you should reinforce it by selecting those keywords and working on them.

And with #5, that gives you an idea of whether each keyword is targeting the right public for you.

So with SEO, #1-5 above tend to all be important. You don’t have to use them all in every case, but in some cases you would.
